Top Ten Boudoir Photo Tips – Albany, NY Boudoir Photographer

As I’ve launched my first Boudoir Suite Event  at the Desmond Hotel Albany, NY – many questions have come in from potential clients!

Take a read through this…

 Boudoir Session Q & A

1. “Where do you photograph these sessions?”

Generally, right in the clients home.  I actually really love incorporating parts of your living space into the session!  Personally, I think it brings an added sexiness to the pictures!  However, that doesn’t work for everyone!  Which is why I’m thrilled to be offering these Boudoir Suite Events at beautiful hotel rooms around Albany, NY.

2. “What can I expect to spend on a Boudoir Session start to finish?”

As with any Custom Photography experience, you want to consider this an investment.  Custom Photography is, and should be very different than a mall studio session.  Price is going to reflect that.  I’ve conveniently couple the session and an album of your gallery images for any session shot at a clients home.  $695

For the Boudoir Suite Event the pricing structure is slightly differnt.

*Beautiful Suite at the Desmond Hotel
…*Hair/Makeup Artist available: Jodi Polsinelli Owner of ECCO Salon!
$100 for both – $120 for it to include a second up-do look

{Simply Sexy} $375
1 hour portrait session
12-15 image gallery
10 5×7 prints

{Boudoir Perfection} $550
1.5 hour portrait session
25-30 image gallery
8×8 Custom Album containing all images
Digital Music Slide Presentation

*A La Carte Ordering can be added to either Collection

3. “What do I need to bring with me for a Boudoir Session?”
I always suggest to bring more then you think you’ll need; we’ll take a look together! Ideas – men’s shirt/tie, teddy, corsette, g.belt, bras/underwear, heels, jewelery. By no means do you need to go out and purchase a collection of lingerie!!!  Bring what you have, maybe purchase 1 or 2. LOOK IN YOUR CLOSET AS WELL !

4. “I don’t love parts of my body – and I’m not super skinny. Have you worked with women like me?”

YES!! Honestly, most of us would say we have some problem spots! Myself included! I had the same conversation when I had my Boudoir session shot. A good photographer understands angles and lighting -… communicate your concerns – and they’ll make you look & feel beautiful and proud of your body!

5. “What type of poses/shots do you take?”
I mix it up! There are samples on my site
www.geninegullickson.net
Basically, some are full body, some have more of a focus on your face, and others
are body parts, and body lines. Body lines are some of my favorite to shoot! I look at the curves and shapes, and create a high contrast, abstract image that really is viewed more as art than a Boudoir photo!

6. “I always close my eyes, fake smile etc. Can you work with that?”
Common question! Not all shots will be looking into the camera. Many will be looking away. We’ll start with those, and chat to help you relax. I also love to use the look down/close your eyes, take a breath and open trick. Works every time! Fake smiles don’t survive my sessions! I’ve cracked the toughest fake smilers:)

7. “Did you really have your own Boudoir Session done? What was it like?”
Yes! I had my own shot in March. It was nerve wracking in the beginning! You do settle in. Suggest starting with most conservative look first. Honestly,  I listened to the photographer and stylist. Remember you’re hiring professionals – communication is key, but trust them, and let them guide you through your session!

8. “What did you think about your pictures?”
Blown away! I really am not liking that I’m getting older :) Wrinkles/gray hair etc. – it’s hard to explain how amazing the pics made me feel. Confident, and comfortable with my body – which I probably haven’t felt since before kids! I really mean it when I say every woman should do one, and had I known I would have done it a lot sooner!

9. “What do your past clients have to say about their sessions?”

Quotes from them… “My husband just sits and looks at the book, he can’t believe I did this for him. He loves it”

“I’ve never had more beautiful pictures taken of myself.  My husband was thrilled at how hot his wife looks.”

“This is exactly what I needed to do for ME…”

“These pictures are 10% me, and 90% your skills/photographic eye… I love them!”

“I can’t thank you enough…”

10.  “There are a few photographers in the area that shoot these, Why should I book with you?”

First of all I strongly encourage you to look around.  Your pictures are only going to be great if you’re comfortable with who is shooting them!  Being a woman,  and a mother, and out of my “prime” … I get it!  I understand body image issues, I understand wanting to feel good about the body you have today. And how important that can be in your day to day confidence.  I know people connect with me easily; I truely enjoy the session time and getting to chat with my clients. I see body shapes as art – and will provide you with beautiful portraits, as well as artistic abstracts showcasing your body lines.  And I guess lastly, I will listen to you concerns and wants, and we’ll work together to come away with nothing less than a gallery of images that make you smile from your head to your toes.

Sensual and Artistic Boudoir Sessions – Albany, NY Boudoir Photographer

Every time I get to work with a woman for a Boudoir Session – I fall more and more in love with them!   These sessions are so creative – and really allow me to see the lines of your body in an artistic way.   I don’t think many people think they would display an image like this in their home, or atleast not anywhere other then their bedroom.  HOWEVER!  If you have something abstract, that is all about lines – high contrast, black and white with a great balance of postive and negative space…. Why not???  I actually have one of my clients shoulder/collar bone shots huge in my dining room, and get so many compliments on it.   Here’s a few from a recent session – she was amazing – nevervous as everyone is in the beginning, but thrilled with how it went and what she’s seen so far!  Enjoy…

Body Lines – Albany, NY Boudoir Photographer

lines01Body Lines – Albany, NY Boudoir Photographer

Not many people think that the slightest curve on their body could be thought of as beautiful – let a lone make a good art piece for their home!   Over the past year – I’ve been drawn more
and more to the lines of women’s bodies.  I’d always noticed the amazing abdominal curve of a pregnant mother – and having worked with some Boudoir clients allowed me to really focus in on the lines
women have!  The main focus of this last Boudoir session was – to capture those curves.  The little details from an artistic perspective.  I’m thrilled with the way the session went – of course having a
client who fully took my direction made it easier for the ideas to flow!     I’m printing some of these to show at both 3rd Friday in Schenectady, NY  next month, as well as Professor Javas in Albany, NY; also in February. lines2
Kind of amazing what you can see when you look closely.  Just another way to think about what a Boudoir session could be for you.
No need for clothing changes – just you, your body and some black fabric…

2009 in Review

2009 in Review

It’s hard to believe that there is only 2 weeks + left in 2009!  It seems to always start to fly by once the Fall hits.   Many of you know that before photography – I taught elementary ed. in Niskayuna.   It’s a regular practice for a teacher to self-reflect.  Now I’m not talking about requirements, just day to day, or lesson to lesson reflections.  Although my teaching days are behind me – I still find that routine very much ingrained.   I love looking through proofs from a session – and discovering what I walked away with.   I mentally prepare before a session – and generally do have an idea of what my client is looking for, as well as ideas I have in mind.  However, the best photos are always a result of just letting the session unfold in front of me!

In preparation for 2010 - I’ve had the chance to go back through the sessions from the year.  I really was honored to meet and work with so many wonderful families!  Maternity and Newborn sessions begun 2009 – working with many expecting mothers, and some absolutely beautiful newborn babies!  As I reviewed these images, I really noticed how much I do stick to my style, or maybe better said – my vision of what should be documented during these sessions.  I LOVE the lines that my eye is drawn to.  The roundness of a belly – the delicate wrinkles of newborn fingers.  These details are so precious – that I  focus on them.   Two words to sum it up…. ”detailed simplicity”  :)

Boudoir was a new area that I worked with this year – and how much fun it is!!!  The nerves were always there – but quickly diminished and turned to laughing, joking and relaxed smiles!  The women I worked with were stunning. And I’m thrilled to know how beautiful they felt when they viewed their images.   Hoping to really work in this are more next year – keep the idea in your head … it’s the perfect gift – and although it sounds crazy…Valentine’s Day isn’t far off!!!

As we moved into the warmer months – the family and children sessions became more popular. I met the owners of Felthousen’s Greenhouse and Florist in Niskayuna, and joined them for their Spring Event.   Not much cuter than little kids and baby chicks!    Again, looking at the families I worked with this year - there’s a common thread to their images.  Playfulness!  Of course I’ll pose everyone and ask that everyone look at the camera – but that’s not my goal.   Natural interactions – squealing laughs and tickles….those are the elements that make amazing Family Portraits!

In addition to family sessions, the summer brought some High School Senior sessions as well!  One of my favorite thing to do, is to help Seniors really celebrate who they are!  I love hearing about their hobbies, seeing their clothing style, and seeing the excitement in their eyes as they talk about what the next fall will hold for them!!!

ggimages281

September, October and November were loaded with family sessions, generally with the “HOLIDAY PHOTO” the number one priority!   So many great families!!!

I honestly can not say enough about the wonderful people I’ve worked with this year.  I’m honored that so many of my clients have chosen to work with me year after year – and am appreciative of those who contacted me for their first sessions.

Best wishes for a delightful holiday season – full of laughs, good health, and of course wonderful photos!

Looking forward to seeing you in 2010! ;)

Be My Valentine? – Albany, NY Boudoir Photographer

book6-copyAre you wondering why in the world I’m talking about Valentine’s Day in December? !   Well believe it or not…Valentine’s Day is only about 8 weeks away!  As with any holiday session, booking needs to planned so that there’ s time to shoot the session, process, order, and get everything into your hands!  So in actuality…all of you women in the Capital District need to start looking at your calendars and get ready to book your Valentine’s Day Boudoir Session now!  Boudoir photos are a wonderful, and very appreciate gifts for our husbands, boyfriend.  And feeling good about yourself and your body, is a pretty nice gift to yourself as well!

I’ve posted about Boudoir before – and just want to recap a bit.   Yes, Boudoir means “bedroom” and generally are considered sexy/beautiful pictures.   Most women that contact me are a bit nervous, and sometimes embarrassed!  All of those jitters quickly diminish as we chat about what you want your boudoir session to be, and I fill you in on the details of how one typically goes!  The biggest thing I want clients to know, is that I work very hard to make them feel comfortable, confident and beautiful!  We’ll talk about angles, whether or not you like your profile or straight on shots better.  Parts of your body you love, and even the ones you don’t care for!  These sessions are shot in the comfort of your own home.  And again, we make it what you want it to be.  We’ll use different rooms in the house/apartment – and a lot of window light for that soft glow.   I also like to focus on the lines of the body.  So in some shots,  I may be focusing on your legs, back, shoulders — and you get to relax as I work some magic behind the camera!   I will be getting some “testimonials” from women I’ve worked with, as hearing about someone’s experience is generally what people really want!

Here’s another shot from previous sessions, and a testimonial from a future client…  kelly3-copy

TESTIMONIAL

“Thank you so much for taking so much time with me last night!  I know I had a ton of questions…I didn’t mean to keep you for so long. But your patience and understanding and wanting to make me feel so comfortable makes me know that you are the only person I could ever feel ok about doing something like this with!!  So please, take that as even a higher compliment than taking the most beautiful pictures of someone.  The pictures I am sure are wonderful, but to be able to make someone feel comfortable enough to show her “bedroom” side to someone other than the man she loves, is huge.  So thank you for this.”

Boudoir – Boudoir – Boudoir — Albany, NY Photographer

Well this seems to be the word of the month!  ;)

I’ve been getting so many inquiries for this type of session – and actually I had one this morning!  I didn’t realize that there really aren’t that many photographers in the area who do them, or maybe advertise that they do.  I personally, LOVE them!  It’s a great hour spent making a woman feel beautiful and sexy — how could it not be fun?   Most initial inquiries are always with a bit of reservation… and I often hear/read ….”I can’t believe I’m even thinking about this!”    Very understandable that nerves would creep in a bit!  I think the women I’ve talked and worked with would tell you how quickly that feeling dissolves – and is replaced by excitement.   Bottom line really – men are visual creatures!!!!   I love the idea of giving these type of photos as a birthday or anniversary gift.   Don’t know about you, but I try so hard to come up with unique ideas for my husband’s presents… and unfortunately resort to a golf something more often than I’d like to admit!  LOL

The way I’m currently running these sessions is to take all the final session images – once approved by the client of course! – and order them in a bound, hardcover book.  Proofs are given as digital files so they can be shared if you wanted, or easily loaded to a phone :)   The books are perfect – beautifully layed out, and customized to each client.

If you’ve ever considered this type of session – I really do encourage you to give me a call and chat about it!  If you haven’t…think about it!  I will try to post what I can about these sessions, and of course share the photos I’m given permission to share- with you.

Check back for updates and samples from this session!!!

Father’s Day Surprise, Boudoir Style…Albany, NY Photographer

kelly6-copy

kelly3-copy

As I posted earlier, I was luck enough to photograph this blonde beauty. I’ve done several past sessions for her and her family – nothing just focused on “MOM” . It really was a last minute Father’s Day gift idea – which proved to be an amazing session! Like anyone, it’s easy to get nervous in front of the camera. But, as I told her – you just need to relax, take the guidance of your photographer, and think loving thoughts. All the rest will unfold on it’s own. Obviously I’m a bit limited on which images I can share – but really wanted to give you just a taste of what a Boudoir session can be. I really can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t love a session, where you feel beautiful, and sexy. She was thrilled – even saying “I’ve never had a more beautiful picture taken of me in my life…” and her husband was thrilled with his gift of dreamy pictures of the love of his life…
